District Heating is Heating of the Future!
In addition to industry, and among others, transport, the European Union's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 will certainly need to be more strongly supported by district heating. It was one of the highlights of the Toplinarstvo - Forum on District Heating and Cooling that has been organized on September 16th and 17th in Vukovar and gathered the most important participants in the district heating business from Croatia and neighbouring countries.
Namely, district heating systems in EU currently cover app. 13% of heating needs, which can contribute to energy transition and improve energy efficiency by more noticeable inclusion of renewables in such systems, but also in district cooling systems, which are also becoming more common in Europe. For years, gas central heating systems have managed to put fuel oil out of use, but unfortunately they have also supressed district heating systems as well as central boiler rooms in Croatia. However, due to the call for decarbonization and the rejection of the old ways of heating the glove is now being thrown in their face by district heating on renewables - Sun energy and biomass and more recently geothermal energy.
